The important thing about getting elected is that the winner gets a 4 year term.
On Reigate and Banstead Council, there are 45 councillors representing 15 wards. 3 councillors/members for each ward.
Each year (well 3/4 years - see # bottom of this post), one of the seats in the 3 councillor/member ward comes to the end of its term. This is different to London. In London boroughs, all 45 seats would be up for grabs ALL AT ONCE every four years.
Here's the history:
In 2022. There were 3 Conservative councillors in Hooley Merstham and Netherne. At that 2022 election, a Conservative seat reached the end of its 4 year term/cycle. It was HELD by the Conservatives.
In 2023, another Conservative seat reached the end of its 4 year term. This is when I got elected, resulting in 2 Conservatives and 1 Green representing Hooley, Merstham, and Netherne.
This year, it was again another Conservative seat that came to the end of its 4 year cycle. Joel Gabriel won and duly became the 2nd Green elected for the ward. Only one Conservative remains.
My 4 year term ends in 2027.
REIGATE & BANSTEAD 2024 results (summary)
Green Party stood in all 15 wards. Three seats came to the end of their 4 year-term. We retained these three. We also won two other Conservative seats:
HOLD Earlswood & Whitebushes - (Gillian Vischer)
HOLD Redhill East
HOLD South Park & Woodhatch
GAIN from CON Hooley, Merstham & Netherne (Joel Gabriel)
GAIN from CON Horley East & Salfords (Neha Boghani)
Now 13 Greens are on the Council, up from 11.
# To confuse things, there are also county council elections. These are due in 2025, and then in 2029. In 2025, Frank Kelly - the sole county councillor for Merstham and Banstead South division - yes the same Frank Kelly who lost his Reigate and Banstead council seat, has to seek re-election.
Then in 2026 the final Conservative seat on Reigate and Banstead Council is up for grabs. Finally, as mentioned above, I will need to step down in 2027 to seek re-election.
